Hydrolats, or hydrosols as they’re also known, are available in a variety of types and have a wide range of uses. But what exactly are they and what’s so special about rose water hydrolat?

What is rose water hydrolat?

Rose water hydrolat or hydrosol is a pure and natural product that is produced as a by-product of the essential oil steam distillation process. When a plant is steam distilled to make essential oils, at the end of the process a liquid is left over and this is what is referred to as a hydrolat.

A hydrolat is not an oil, it’s a water, but it contains the dissolved plant extract or essence, and therefore the properties of the plant. In some cases, such as with rose hydrolat, you can an element of the rose scent too, but some hydrolats have hardly may smell slightly different from the plant they’re derived from or have hardly any aromatic smell. The lack of aroma doesn’t affect its therapeutic properties though.

Hydrolats contain no preservatives, alcohol or colours and are completely natural, which is one of the reasons why they’re so sought after and popular. Sometimes the term hydrosol is used to describe this product, or even flower waters or floral waters, but they essential mean the same thing.

What can rose water hydrolat be used for?

Hydrolats, such as rose water hydrolat, have a multitude of uses, from skin toners and spritzers, to linen refreshers and therapeutic purposes.

Many people choose to use them as a skin toner, to freshen and cleanse the skin and help add water back into dehydrated skin. Most of the manufactured skin toners contain alcohol or other ingredients, so the benefit of rose water hydrolat is that it’s completely pure and natural. It’s ideal for use by anyone that doesn’t want to add harsh chemicals to their skin, for those who are sensitive to other ingredients, for those who aren’t able to deal with strong smelling skin products or simply by anyone wanting to tone and cleanse their skin in the most natural way.

In addition to a toner, rose hydrolat can be used as a cooling skin spritzer, during the summer months, to freshen up on a long flight or journey or simply as a refreshing body mist. You could even spray it on your clothes or washing too, to give them a fresh scent.

Pure hydrolats are also recognised as having many of the healing properties of essential oils, so can be used for therapeutic purposes too. Rose hydrolat, for example, has calming and soothing properties, so can be used on its own or alongside other treatments to help promote a calmer state of body and mind. If you’re tired after a hard day, a few drops of rose hydrolat can be added to a warm bath to help promote relaxation.

How should rose water hydrolat be stored?

As hydrolat is a pure product, they do need to be stored appropriately to maintain purity and make the most of their shelf life. Ideally, hydrolat should be kept in a cool, dark place, out of the way of direct sunlight. They can be stored in cool cupboards or even in a fridge – using them direct from the fridge, particularly if you’re using them as a toner or spritzer, can be a very refreshing experience!

Why use hydrolats alongside essential oils?

Although hydrolats can have some of the same properties as essential oils and be used for therapeutic purposes, they’re by no means the same.

In comparison to the majority of essential oils, hydrolats can be applied directly to the skin, as they are in a diluted form. Although you may choose to use either essential oils or hydrolats, they do work very used in conjunction with one another.
